LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. Kevin Daley, R-Lum, issued the following statement on Tuesday, in response to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s fiscal year 2020 budget presentation:
“The governor’s budget proposal addressed many priorities shared by Michigan residents.
“I was happy to see her discuss investing in our schools and infrastructure. These are things we can all get behind, but fixing our roads and bridges needs to be done the right way.
“We can all agree that our roads need improvement. That’s why the Legislature voted in 2015 to increase road funding over a period of years. These efforts are slated to continue to increase funding over the next few years. Before we put this proposed tax burden on our families and businesses, we need to let the previous road funding take full effect.
“I also appreciate the fact that the governor is living up to our shared commitment to invest in the skilled trades and workforce training that we need right here in mid-Michigan.
“I hope to continue to see greater investment into programs that teach kids how to work with their hands. For years we’ve ignored the need for skilled trades programs, and I am looking forward to changing that.
“As a husband, father, and grandfather, I want to make sure we leave things better off than how we found them. That’s why I’m committed to making sure we put forward a common-sense budget that doesn’t burden our hard-working taxpayers.
“I look forward to working with my colleagues and the governor to make sure we continue to have a balanced, responsible, and common-sense budget that puts Michigan families first.”
