LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Kevin Daley on Wednesday called on Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to announce special election dates for the vacated 35th District in order to ensure more than 270,000 residents are not left without a voice in the Michigan Senate.
“This vacancy didn’t come as a surprise,” said Daley, R-Lum, during remarks on the Senate floor. “We have known since November that the previous senator from the 35th District would resign from her seat for a new desk in Washington. We also knew ahead of time that she planned to officially resign from her seat on Jan. 3. Yet here we are – almost a month later – and our governor has still not fulfilled her duty to call for a special election. I remember it was just two years ago when the governor called for a speedy special election on the very same day after two House seats were vacated.”
The 35th District includes parts of Bay, Midland and Saginaw counties and borders the 26th District represented by Daley.
“All Michigan residents deserve representation at all levels of government. I urge the governor to take a break from her national book tour and presidential race preparation to return to Michigan to act like a true leader, fulfill her duty and call for this special election,” Daley said.
